The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team nearly overcame a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter today but came up short at Skidmore 8-6. The loss for the Red Dragons drops them to 1-2 overall in the early season while Skidmore picks up its initial win of the season moving to 1-1.
The Inside Story
Trailing 7-4 entering the final period, senior
Dean Cannon (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and junior
Sam Haita (Stephentown/La Salle Institute) went to work bring Oneonta back to 7-6 with 9:40 remaining in the contest. Cannon and Haita connected on consecutive goals at 11:38 and 10:30 with Cannon notching both goals. Less than one minute after Cannon made the score 7-5, it was an unassisted goal by Haita that brought the Red Dragons to within a goal with 9:40 remaining.
Skidmore tallied an insurance goal with 1:26 left, as they secured the victory.
Skidmore jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before sophomore
Luke Maslin (Owego/Owego Free Academy) stopped the run with his first goal of the game. The goal was assisted by junior
Kieran Rowley (Long Beach/Long Beach) and came with 2:04 left in the opening period.
The Thoroughbreds pushed its lead back to four goals with an early tally in the second period. Oneonta countered with back-to-back goals to pull closer at 5-3. Maslin scored again tis time with the assist from senior
Dean Cannon (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). At 10:33, Rowley scored an unassisted goal for the Red Dragons. The game would remain 5-3 heading into halftime.
In a relatively quiet third period, Skidmore tacked on a pair of goals to take a 7-3 lead heading to the final period.
Just the Stats
Skidmore outshot Oneonta 43-33 with 25 of its shots on cage while Oneonta put 16 shots on goal. The Thoroughbreds won 10-of-16 faceoffs while collecting 38 ground balls to only 22 for the Red Dragons.
