Pittsford, NY - The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis had a tough start to their season falling to 0-3 but got back to the win column dropping the St. John Fisher Cardinals 6-3.
The doubles saw senior
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) and junior
Mason Spottek (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley)Â gain a triumph in the top flight as they drew first blood with an 8-3 win. The third doubles duo of freshman
Noah Khair (New Delhi, INDIA/National Institute of Open Schooling) and his partner sophomore
Joshua Mann (East Greenbush/Columbia) toppled their opponents with the identical score of 8-3. That win in the third position secured a 2-1 lead going into the singles stanza.
In the singles Oneonta took wins in the first, second, third and fourth positions. Junior August Lepique won in straight sets in the top singles spot winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, Spottek got his second win on the day when in the second singles flight he also won in straight sets overwhelming his opponent 6-1, 6-1. Khair jumped up two positions from his usual fifth spot and filled into today at third singles and he came through with an impressive straight set win 6-0, 6-3 and that was enough to clinch the dual match for SUNY Oneonta and Khairs second win on the day. Rounding out the wins on the evening for the Red Dragon men was junior
Jacob Dornsife (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant)Â toppling his Cardinals opponent with an impressive 6-4, 6-1 victory securing the 6-3 Oneonta win.
The Red Dragons will be back in action next Saturday, March 26th when they go back on the road to take on Houghton College. That contest will take place on the campus of Houghton in Caneadea, NY with the action getting underway at 1 PM. The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis squad will be looking for their second win on the young campaign.
