The 2022 SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse season will commence Wednesday, Feb. 23 at home versus Ithaca College. The game is scheduled for a 3pm start.
Â
The Red Dragons are coming off an abbreviated 5-3 2021 season that saw them capture first place in the SUNYAC East Division and qualify for the conference tournament for the first time since 2015. This year's squad will be deeper and more experienced than in years past, as the squad looks to take the next step forward under fifth year Head Coach
Pete Owens.
Â
"This is a fun group to work with," said Owens. "I believe our hard work in recruiting and culture building will really start to pay dividends this year. This is a group that is intrinsically motivated; it doesn't take much to bring out the competitive nature of this team. Our guys are chomping at the bit."
Â
The offense this spring will be fueled by returning starters, senior
Dean Cannon (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and junior
Connor Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson). The two led the squad last season in scoring with Cannon topping out with 18 goals and three assists and Gallagher contributing nine goals and nine assists.Â
David Guest (Niskayuna/Niskayuna), who has played consistently through his first two abbreviated seasons, is now a veteran presence in the midfield. Coach Owens expects the young talent of
Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) and
Luke Maslin (Owego/Owego Free Academy) to blossom.
Â
The defensive unit for the Red Dragons will be anchored by a trio of juniors and one sophomore. Juniors
Jake Dominikoski (Niskayuna/Niskayuna),
Christian Moreno (Massapequa/Massapequa) and
Jack Mueller (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) will be joined by second-year player
Ryan Nicholson (Smithtown/Smithtown East). Moreno and Dominikoski enter with the most game experience of the four with Moreno usually drawing the assignment of guarding the opposing team's top attackman. In 2021, he collected 27 ground balls while leading the team with 12 caused turnovers. Dominikoski tallied seven ground balls while contributing one goal and one assist on the attack. Mueller and Nicholson are primed to make bigger impacts in 2022.
Â
Senior
Timothy Shanley (West Hempstead/West Hempstead) is the top face-off man as a returning player. Last spring, he won 73-of-116 face-offs while leading the team with 37 ground balls. Shanley was recognized by the SUNYAC coaches as an Honorable Mention player in 2021.
Â
Senior
Jordan Berson (Old Bethpage/JFK) returns as the most experienced netminder for the Red Dragons. Last season he posted a 5-3 record with a 9.31 goals against and a .521 save percentage. Berson earned Honorable Mention All-SUNYAC honors for his performance between the pipes.
Â
After its opener against Ithaca, Oneonta will be on the road before returning to Red Dragon Field for a contest versus city-rival Hartwick on Thursday, Mar. 10. The opening SUNYAC game is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 26 at home versus SUNY Geneseo.
