ITHACA, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's indoor track and field team opened the 2022-23 season at Saturday's Greg Page Relays hosted by Cornell. The Red Dragons faced many Division I, II, and III schools, with the sprinters, throwers, and jumpers getting their first chance to compete this winter.Â
In the 60-meter preliminaries, first-years Josh Jerome (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), Nick Darrigo (Albany, NY/Guilderland), and Drew Obernesser (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) made their collegiate debuts. Jerome placed 45th with a 7.40, while Darrigo took 55th at 7.51. Obernesser ran a 7.68 for 73rd overall.Â
Sophomore Alec Weiss (Selden, NY/Newfield) ran a personal record in the 300-meter at 38.17, which was good for second in his heat and 55th overall. Junior Richard Mangogna (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) also recorded a personal best with a 38.47. He finished second in his heat and finished 61st. Jerome crossed at 39.20, while junior Alex Mavros (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) ran a personal record of 39.38.
Mavros followed with another personal best in the 60-meter hurdles after crossing at 9.04 for 19th overall.Â
In the high jump, freshman Alex Ordonez (Troy, NY/Troy) was the top Division III finisher and bested three jumpers from Cornell with a mark of 1.90 meters to place third overall.Â
Mangogna hit a school and personal record mark of 4.62 meters in the pole vault and finished 8th. He bested his program record of 4.55 meters he set last season. Junior Michael Carey (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) vaulted 3.67 meters, and senior William Ford (Brewster, NY/Brewster) hit a career-best of 3.27 meters.
Freshman Chad Franklin led the Red Dragons with a 15th-place finish in the long jump at 6.20 meters. Sophomore Joseph Ciardi (Accord, NY) placed 19th at 6.00 meters, and junior Cliff Biehl marked a personal best of 5.95 meters. In the triple jump, Jerome placed sixth at 12.96 meters.Â
The Oneonta throwers also had a solid day, and junior Vincent Zheng (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) went seventh in the shot put with a throw of 13.30 meters. Senior Miles Moliterni (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) tallied a personal best of 11.40 meters to place 16th. He followed up with another career best of 15.52 meters in the weight throw to earn an 8th-place finish. Zheng took 15th with a mark of 12.82 meters.Â
The Red Dragons next compete at the Utica Winter Open on Sat. Jan. 14 at 11 a.m.
