CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A couple goals in the first half made the difference as the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team fell to Cortland 3-2 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Semifinals. Oneonta's season comes to an end with a 7-10 overall record.
Cortland put pressure on senior keeper
Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) early in the game and created eight penalty corner opportunities, scoring on their eighth corner with a minute remaining in the first period. Lily Fox pushed out the corner to Elizabeth Pratt. Pratt gave a short pass in front of her to Hanna Corrigan who scored from the top of the shooting circle while Tumino was screened off by Madison Rice.
Oneonta knotted the game three minutes into the second period. Senior
Carly Waszczak (Northport, N.Y./Northport) pushed the penalty corner out to the top of shooting circle to senior
Claire Mahoney (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River). Mahoney passed inside the circle to junior
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport) who gained control of the ball, shot, and scored on the left side of the cage. The tie was momentary as Pratt gave Cortland a 2-1 lead with 8:30 left in the half. Off a penalty corner, Isabel Adams took a shot inside the circle that was saved by Tumino. The rebound was redirected towards Pratt who slung it back towards the cage for the goal.
Cortland kept possession of the ball for the majority of the second half as Oneonta was unable to get a shot attempt on goal for the equalizer.
Tumino ended with a career-high 16 saves and Waszczak had two defensive saves, while Emma Morgan did not record a save for Cortland.
Cortland outshot Oneonta 32-2 and had a 27-2 advantage on penalty corners.
