QUEENS, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team came up short in a closely contested match against Baruch College, 5-4 Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons had a couple tough breaks in the singles matches, losing two matches in super tiebreaker sets.

Baruch (1-0) took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches and were zeroing in on 3-0 lead heading into the singles matches. Seniors Jacob Dornsife (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) and Mason Spottek (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) kept Oneonta (0-1) away from getting swept with a super tiebreaker win on the No. 1 court 8-7, (7-3).

Spottek and Dornsife won their respected singles matches on the No. 2 and No. 3 court. Spottek defeated Juan Paredes 6-0, 6-3, while Dornsife beat Georgy Fomin 6-1, 6-0. Freshman William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS) collected his first collegiate dual victory on the No. 6 singles over Liam Cooper 6-2, 6-1.

The Bearcats secured the win after they squeaked by on the No. 4 and No. 5 singles court. Sophomore Noah Khair (New Delhi, INDIA/National Institute of Open Schooling) took the first set on the No. 4 court 6-3, before falling in the second set 3-6 against George Arteaga. Arteaga would go on to win the super tiebreaker, 10-6. On the No. 5 singles court, junior Joshua Mann (East Greenbush/Columbia) battled it out with Philip Dwan. Dwan took the first set through a tie breaker, 7-6 (7-3) before Mann won the second set 6-3. In an even closer tiebreaker, Dwan came out on top 10-8.

The Red Dragons return to action in the Spring semester, February 18th, when they travel to St. Lawrence University.
