Red Dragons Defeat Mustangs in Home Opener

ONEONTA, N.Y. - After a month on the road, the Oneonta women's volleyball team played in its first home match of the season and defeated Morrisville 3-1. The Red Dragons (7-9) won the first two sets 25-22 and 26-24 before the Mustangs (11-7) took the third 25-19. Oneonta answered in the fourth by winning 25-20.

Three service aces from Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) and a pair of Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) kills gave the Red Dragons a 6-0 lead in the first set. Oneonta built a 9-3 lead following a double block from Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall) and Clara Culeton (Oswego, NY/Oswego). The Red Dragons then pushed to a seven-point lead after kills by Culeton and Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East). Morrisville slowly began chipping away, and an ace from Brianna Gates cut the lead to 16-12. Culeton scored the following three Oneonta points with two kills and an ace, but the Mustangs rattled off a 9-0 run to take their first lead at 22-19. Oneonta answered with a 6-0 span with kills by Davis and Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) and a Biggers' ace.

Three straight Fabrizio aces put the Red Dragons up 9-5 in the second. Morrisville responded with a 4-0 span to tie and eventually built up to a 17-13 lead. Carsyn Rachuta (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) knocked in an ace, and then a pair of kills from Culeton gave Oneonta a 21-17 advantage. The Mustangs fought back with libero Ku Ku sending in three consecutive aces to tie at 24-24. Oneonta took the following two points, with Culeton capping the set with an ace.

A 6-1 run with three Fabrizio kills put Oneonta up 15-14 in the third. The Mustangs responded with seven unanswered points as Morrisville controlled the remainder of the set. Fabrizio sent in two more aces, but the Mustangs took the final three points.

Blocks from Davis and Christie pushed the Oneonta lead to five in the fourth, and a Biggers ace made it 19-13. Morrisville kept it close, but Culeton recorded the final two kills to seal the win.

Culeton led Oneonta with 14 kills and added two blocks. Fabrizio tallied 12 kills and a team-high five aces, while Davis had seven kills and five blocks. Kayla Rende (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) dished out 36 assists, and Rachuta had a team-high 17 digs.
