ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's volleyball team was swept in three sets on Friday evening at the Dewar Arena. Cortland (16-4, 8-0 SUNYAC) won 25-15, 25-18, and then 25-20 over Onetona (10-12, 2-6 SUNYAC.Â
Cortland took a 4-1 lead in the first before Clara Culeton (Oswego, NY/Oswego), and Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) sent in kills to tie. After two Cortland errors, Oneonta took a 6-5 lead, but Cortland used an 11-0 run capped off with two Carly Haegele aces to go ahead 16-6. Oneonta chipped away with a kill by Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and then an Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) ace to cut the lead to seven. Two consecutive kills from Cortland's Giovanna Rossi made it 22-13, and Danielle Fisk used an ace to seal the set win.Â
Cortland took a comfortable 10-3 lead in the second. After a Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) kill made it 12-6, Davis blocked two straight attacks to make it a four-point set. Cortland pulled away at 17-10, but Oneonta used a 4-0 span with two Davis kills and another Alicea ace to cut the deficit to three. Both sides traded points, but again Fisk gave Cortland the set following a service ace.Â
After falling behind 18-11 in the third, Oneonta took seven of the following nine points in a streak that included two Culeton kills and an ace by Karli Chamberlin (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls). Davis and Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) blocked an attack to put the score at 21-19. Two Oneonta errors gave Cortland the following two points, and a Biggers kill made it 23-20. Cortland wrapped up the night by scoring the final two points.Â
Biggers led Oneonta with nine kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Culeton finished with seven kills and two blocks, while McCabe added five kills. Kayla Rende (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) dished out 23 assists.
Allie Sturgess tallied a match-high ten kills, while Rossi had nine.Â
