ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Fifth-year Clara Coleton recorded her 1,000th career kill in the second set as the Oneonta women's volleyball handled Fredonia in three sets on Saturday afternoon. The number ranks sixth all-time in the Oneonta record books. The Red Dragons swept the Blue Devils 25-8, 25-20, and 25-11 to move to 9-11 overall and 2-5 in the SUNYAC. Fredonia falls to 4-16 and 2-5 in the conference.Â
Oneonta cruised in the first set, hitting .400 percent to win by double digits. After the Blue Devils scored two unanswered, the Red Dragons exploded for an 11-0 run that consisted of six Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) service aces to lead 20-5. Fredonia's Emma Foley finally broke the streak with a kill, but Collen McCabe used a kill to spur a 3-0 Oneonta run. Fredonia scored twice before Culeton recorded the set-winning kill from a Kayla Rende (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) set.Â
Culeton needed just one more kill to reach 1,000 and reached that mark after Fredonia opened the second set on a 3-0 run. Biggers set the ball, and Culeton knocked it in between the Fredonia players to earn the mark. She followed up with an ace to cut the Ble Devils' lead to 3-2. Fredonia continued to hold a slight lead, and Amaya Lewczyk sent in a kill to tie 10-10. Junior Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall), Biggers, and Culeton added kills to give Oneonta a three-point advantage. The Red Dragons never gave up the lead after that, and the set was finished with a kill from Fabrizio and a Fredonia error.Â
Oneonta took a 12-7 lead in the third following a Biggers' kill. The Blue Devils responded before the Red Dragons rattled off another 11-0 span. Fredonia made it 24-11, but Biggers closed the match with a kill.Â
Biggers led the team with ten kills and a career-high seven aces. Culeton finished with seven kills, three aces, and three blocks, while junior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) had four blocks. Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) grabbed ten digs, and Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) tallied eight. Rende dished out a match-high 28 assists.Â
