Women’s Tennis begin 2021/22 season with double shutout wins

Take down Hartwick and Alfred College with 9-0 scores

September 3, 2021

Oneonta, NY – Just four-months ago the Red Dragons women's tennis team ended the COVID shortened season with it's third consecutive trip to the conference finals.  It also has been two-years since the women played a fall tennis match.  Out of the gate the tennis team came roaring into what hopes to be a fourth trip to a conference championship appearance.  Starting off the 2021/22 campaign Oneonta notched a double shutout splitting their squad defeating the Hartwick Hawks their hometown rival 9-0 and then went onto defeat The Alfred University Saxons with the identical shutout score of 9-0.  The Red Dragons are now 2-0 to begin the school year.

Some highlights worth noting; Senior Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) and sophomore Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) opened up the afternoon with an 8-5 win against Hartwick in the first doubles position.  They both followed that up with single victories.  The same was true for the number two paired squad of junior Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and senior Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) clinching a doubles win at the second spot 8-3 and both notched singles victories.  Senior Brianna Harmon (Endicott/Union Endicott) and junior Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names) were victorious at the third flight doubles position 8-2 and tallied a pair of singles wins later on clinching the dual competition 9-0 v Hartwick.  Harris came back from a set down to go onto win her sixth tier singles match.

Senior Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and sophomore Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) who made her Red Dragon debut turned in an impressive triumph 8-2 at number one doubles v Alfred.  The number one duo then went onto win their singles matches at the number 1 and 3 positions respectfully.  Sophomore Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) also making her Oneonta debut pairing up with senior Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) in the second doubles spot turned in an impressive 8-1 victory and then followed it up with singles wins with Wilson doing so in a super-tiebreaker.  Senior Ariel Loucks (Averill Park/Averill Park) partnered with freshman Davina Delpozzo (East Greenbush/Columbia-East Greenbush) in the third doubles flight and earned an 8-2 victory as Delpozzo celebrated her debut as a Red Dragon.  The duo had successful singles matches both earning victories and clinching another shutout for Oneonta against the Saxons.

The Red Dragons now have a week to prepare for their first appearance in the Union College Invitational tournament next week on September 11 and 12 in Schenectady on the campus of Union College.  Singles action begins at 10 AM on Saturday the 11th.
