Schenectady, NY – This past weekend the Red Dragons Women's Tennis Squad for the first time in the history of the program were invited to the Union College Invitational with several other high-powered teams. Union College hosted SUNY Oneonta, Holy Cross (a division I women's team) and nationally recognized RPI.
The Red Dragon Women had a terrific showing with some noteworthy performances. Senior
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) lost to the top player from Union in the top-flight in a thrilling match losing (10-5) in the super-tiebreaker coming back from a break down in the second set to force the decider.
Sophomore
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) had a big win in the opening round when she took down the division I player from Holy Cross in straight sets before bowing in the semi-finals of the "B" flight. Freshman
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) also took down a division I Holy Cross opponent in the first round of the C flight in three exciting sets winning 10-6 in the deciding super breaker.
A doubles win against Holy Cross was recorded by seniors
Brianna Harmon (Endicott/Union Endicott) and
Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) as they took down their Holy Cross foes 8-5 in the first round of the B doubles flight.
The Red Dragon women are back in action on Friday, September 17
th at the Heissan Tennis Courts on the campus of SUNY Oneonta v The University of Scranton. The action begins at 4:00 PM.
