Canton, NY – All good things must come to an end and today the SUNY Oneonta Women's Tennis Team had their seven-game winning streak stalled at seven. St. Lawrence University setback the Red Dragons by the score of 7-2.
The 7-2 tally did not tell the whole story. The doubles stanza saw only two service breaks total on courts one and two be the difference as Oneonta went down 2-0. However, sophomores
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) and
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) saved doubles play to keep Oneonta close as they won their match in a tiebreaker in a tight back and forth battle.
Singles was dramatic throughout as four of the courts contested went to super tiebreakers. Senior
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) found herself in the longest match of the afternoon in the top position when she dropped the first set and fought back to take the second and held a 5-1 lead in the super-tiebreaker before bowing 10-7 in the finale'. Schutte suffered a similar fate as she won the first set but dropped the second and the tiebreaker. Holtermann also split sets in the sixth position and then went down to defeat in the tiebreaker.  However, court number four went the distance as well as senior
Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) split sets but won her tiebreaker 10-5 securing the second point on the afternoon.
Coach Mitchel said, "this was one of the closest matches ever played against St. Lawrence and also one of the closest dual matches he has been involved with in quite some time". The 7-2 loss must be put in the rearview mirror quickly as the SUNY Oneonta Women's Tennis Team compete at the national powerhouse RPI on Wednesday, September 29
th on their campus in Troy, NY beginning at 3:30 PM.
