Doubleheader win again for Red Dragon Women’s Tennis now 5-0 on season

1-0 in conference play

September 18, 2021

Oneonta, NY – The Red Dragon women had another banner day on the tennis courts on the campus of SUNY Oneonta with the host recording another doubleheader sweep.  The two victories push the tennis team to an undefeated season now at 5-0.

The first victims on the day was SUNY Farmingdale with the Red Dragons shutting the Rams out 9-0.  Sophomore Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) and junior Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) at the first flight doubled up their foes 8-4.  Sophomores Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) and Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) were also victorious with an 8-5 win in the second position.  Junior Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names) and senior Sarah Sampson (Albany/Albany) had little trouble turning back their opponents in the third position 8-3.

A 3-0 lead for the Red Dragons after doubles was insurmountable for the Rams to come back from.  Schutte, Karen, Shaw, Holtermann, Sampson and Harris disposed of their opponents in straight sets losing only 17 games total between the six singles starters.

The nightcap was the opener of conference play for the Red Dragons which turned out to be a long rain delayed affair against the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals.  5 ½ hours later and a 10-hour day on the courts for Oneonta ended with the home team securing their first conference win of the year with a 7-2 triumph making the Red Dragons 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.

The Red Dragon doubles lineup brought home two wins at the first and second flight.  Seniors Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) won handily 8-1.  Seniors Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) and Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) clinched the second win with alos with a lopsided 8-1 victory.  The Red Dragon women had a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Two rain delays did not stop the Red Dragon express.  Straight set wins for Fraser, Carswell, Macdonald, Wilson and senior Brianna Harman clinched the dual match and a 7-2 triumph was recorded.

The SUNY Oneonta women have six-days of rest before Houghton College and Utica College come to the Red Dragon campus on Friday, September 24th beginning at 4:00 PM.
