Junior
Lucas Fecci (Somers/Somers) scored a pair of goals and added an assist, as the No. 5 nationally ranked SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team easily defeated Potsdam 6-0 in SUNYAC action at home. The win for the Red Dragons was its eighth straight and keeps them unbeaten at 8-0-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference while the Bears leave town 2-7-2 overall and 0-4 in the SUNYAC.
"It was a great day today." Commented Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "The seniors enjoyed it and shared some goals. It was a symbolic on the day we honored the seniors and former assistant coach John Hayen. We posted a shutout for John with Frank shining in his first appearance of the season."
The Inside Story
Fecci got things going early for Oneonta in the eighth minute with his seventh goal of the season. Senior
Matt Howe (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) slotted a pass to Fecci who deposited a shot in the back of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
With just under 10 minutes left in the opening half, senior
Tristan Battistoni (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) recorded a goal on a penalty kick for the second straight game. It was his second goal of the season and gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead that they carried into halftime.
Oneonta put the match out of reach early in the second half with three tallies within an 11-minute span. Fecci notched his second of the game in the 48
th minute carrying the ball into the box before sending a shot to the upper right corner of the goal.
Fecci returned the favor to Howe on the fourth goal when Fecci slotted a pass through the defense for Howe who beat the keeper with a low shot to the left corner of the goal.
Senior
Giddel Alvarado (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) was next with his first as a Red Dragon scoring in the 59
th minute off a rebound of a shot by junior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool/Liverpool).
The final goal of the afternoon came from newcomer
David Vides (Hicksville/Hicksville) who scored the first of his collegiate career off an assist from sophomore
Robert Bruschini (Wilton/South Glens Falls).
Just the Stats
Oneonta outshot Potsdam 22-9 including 13-3 in the second half. Senior Francesco picked up the victory in his first start of the season recording four saves.
What's Next
Oneonta will begin its month-long road trip this coming Wednesday at Hamilton beginning at 4pm.
