The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team wrapped up their season with a 13
th place finish at the Mideast Regional at Ithaca College. The Red Dragons were led by senior
Ahken Chu (Patterson/Carmel) who earned all-region recognition after a fourth-place finish in the 141-pound weight class.
Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City/Johnson City) also earned all-region with a fifth-place finish in the 149-pound bracket. The duo combined for 29.5 of Oneonta's 38 points on the weekend.
The Inside Story
Ahken Chu (Patterson/Carmel) began the tournament with a 15-0 tech fall over Brandon Miller from Ursinus College. Chu suffered a setback in the second round to Cortland's Chandler Merwin who won a 2-0 decision. Chu rallied in his first bout in the consolation round with a 16-0 tech fall over Alfred's Owen Kissell. Chu kept his hopes for a shot at national's alive with an 11-2 major decision over RIT's Isaiah Ocasio. In the consolation semifinals, Chu earned an 8-2 decision over Scranton's Anthony Clarizio. Unfortunately, Chu's season would come to an end when he dropped a hard fought 5-2 decision to TCNJ's Robert Dinger in the third-place bout. Chu finished the season with an overall record of 33-6.
In the opening round of the 149-pound bracket, Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City/Johnson City) won a 9-0 major decision over Oswego's Joshua Bressette. Like Chu, Brazinski was forced into the consolation bracket with a loss in the second round. In his first bout in the consolation bracket, Brazinski pinned Merchant Marine's Steven Shields in just 1:50. Brazinski followed that up with a 7-3 decision over Josh Paisley of Elizabethtown. Brazinski fell to Cortland's Cahal Donavan in the consolation semifinals. Brazinski earned a fifth-place finish with a pin of TCNJ's Anthony Gagliano in 2:26.
