Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball drops road game at Potsdam

Kevin Mackin sets season three-point mark

A Quick Look
Four players in double figures wasn't enough tonight for the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team, as they dropped a road game at Potsdam 91-83.

"Our guys gave a valiant effort, but Potsdam is very tough and made some big plays," said Head Coach Cameron Conover.  "We took too many threes and, although we are a good three-point shooting team, that is not our identity.  We will get a good night sleep and make sure we are ready for a scrappy Plattsburgh tomorrow."

The Inside Story
Despite the setback, senior Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) set the single season mark for made three-pointers.  Mackin, who is the career leader in treys, scored 23 points to finish as the top scorer for Oneonta (17-7, 13-4 SUNYAC).  Mackin hit seven shots from behind the arc, which tied his own career best mark to give him 90 this season breaking the old season mark of 83, which he shared.

The Red Dragons battled all game long but couldn't seem to get the basket to take the lead, as Potsdam (19-5, 14-3 SUNYAC) led for the entirety of the game.  Oneonta tied the score twice early in the opening half before the Bears pulled ahead with a 15-4 run to take a 24-13 lead just past the halfway point.

Oneonta was trailing by nine points with just over four minutes to go in the first half before they went on a 9-2 run led by senior Ian Schultz (Clifton Park, NY/CBA) who scored all nine points.  Schultz was one of two Red Dragons with a double-double in the contest with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Junior Andres Rivera (Bronx, NY/Walton) joined him with 18 points and 11 boards.

A pair of free throws by junior Kameron Hickey (Atlanta, GA/Etowah) tied the score at 36 apiece and a layup by senior Carson Jacobs (Buchanan, NY/Hendrick Hudson) tied it again at 38 apiece with 53 seconds to go in the half.  Oneonta went into the break trailing 42-41.

Oneonta kept the score close in the opening few minutes of the second half before a 13-4 burst by the Bears pushed its lead back to double digits.  The Red Dragons continued to battle making a late run that saw them pull to within four points after a three-pointer by freshman Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou) with 19 seconds left.  Unfortunately, that would be as close as they would get, as Potsdam made 4-of-4 free throws for the final margin of victory.

Just the Stats
Senior Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) was the fourth Oneonta player in double figures scoring 12 points.  Deegan also had five boards and three assists.

Potsdam had three players reach double figures led by Tyrese Baptiste and Isaiah Brown who scored 28 and 27 points respectively.  Baptiste also added a game high 15 rebounds.

Oneonta will end the regular season tomorrow afternoon at Plattsburgh beginning at 4pm.
