Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hernandez dominant; Men's soccer captures Mayor's Cup

A Quick Look
SUNY Oneonta senior Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman) scored three times today to lead the Red Dragons to a 4-0 victory against Penn State Harrisburg and, with it, the 2019 Oneonta Mayor's Cup title.  The title for the Red Dragons was its sixth overall.

"The Mayor's Cup is always our first target of the season so it's a good start for us," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "Congrats to Witman and Scott on their awards…well deserved."

The Inside Story
Oneonta (4-0) got off to a fast start once again today generating some early scoring opportunities.  Hernandez got the Red Dragons on the board in the 17th minute finishing off a pair of passes that got him in close.  The play started with a chip into the box by freshman Denis Fleming (Pearl River/Pearl River) that was controlled by sophomore Arkadij Raiz (Oceanside/Oceanside) who was behind his defender.  Raiz chipped a pass to his right where Hernandez redirected the pass by the Penn State keeper.

Despite outshooting Penn State (2-3) 8-1 in the opening half, the Red Dragons could only manage its one-goal lead at halftime.

Oneonta broke the game open with a pair of early second half goals.  Junior Scott Cebollero (Commack/Commack) converted a penalty kick in the 48th minute after Hernandez was fouled inside the box.  Cebollero took the honor of Defensive MVP.

Hernandez scored two minutes later off an assist from Cebollero.  Hernandez would add a third goal in the 83rd minute off an assist from classmate Giraldo Ritaccio (Westbury/W.T. Clarke).  Hernandez's performance during the two-day tournament earned him the Offensive MVP award.

Just the Stats
Oneonta outshot the Lions 19-6.  Freshman Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) only had to make two saves to record his second shutout in as many starts.
