Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's tennis bested by St. Lawrence

8-3 overall on season

Canton, NY - The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragon women's tennis team finished up their outdoor portion of the fall season and non-conference schedule dropping a competitive match to St. Lawrence 7-2.

Doubles was close on two courts, but the highlight for the Oneonta women came from the number two tandem of sophomores Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein).  The Red Dragon pair jumped out to a 5-2 lead and held onto to win in a very competitive dual 8-6.  The other close match came from the doubles team in the first flight.  Junior Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) and freshman Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) were up 3-0 but could not match the aggressive net play from the Saints pair and went down 8-3
.
The Red Dragons were in striking distance only down 2-1 after the doubles portion of play.  In singles the Saints proved a little too strong for Oneonta.  The lone win in singles came from Lipscomb who started in the two position today and she cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.  The remainder of the singles team went down in straight sets.  Notable performances came from Fraser who played in the top spot and she was involved in a slugfest of ground strokes and long rallies but she lost by only two breaks in the match 6-4, 6-3.  Freshman Emily Greene (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills West) who played in the sixth position lost the first set but was up 4-3 in the second set but ran out of gas dropping the match 6-1, 6-4.

At this point in the season the Red Dragon women are in great shape with an 8-3 record overall and 3-1 in conference play.  They will play three conference foes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday October 4th, 5th and 6th against SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo respectfully on consecutive days.  Each of those contests begin at 3 PM at the Binghamton Tennis Center in Binghamton, NY.  The result of these matches will be for playoff seeding with the hopes of securing a bid to the SUNYAC Championships the following weekend.
