New Paltz halts women's tennis win streak at seven

New Paltz, NY - With top conference seeding on the line and a seven match winning streak at risk, the New Paltz Hawks as far as Oneonta is concerned have been almost unbeatable.  The Red Dragons played very well at several positions but just could not get over the hump.

Doubles was almost a win at the number two position as sophomore Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) and freshman Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) were up breaks of serve but gave them back and dropped an 8-6 decision.  That loss concluded a doubles stanza shutout against for the Red Dragons and a 3-0 deficit going into singles.

The single match highlights of the day were at the number two flight as sophomore Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) was toe to toe with her New Paltz foe.  Crucial points however went the Hawks way and Fraser had to settle for a 6-2, 6-3 setback in a match that took over two hours to complete.  The feature singles matchup on the afternoon was at the fourth position when Karen took down her New Paltz foe in a 2 1/2 hour contest with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in a battle of long rallies and crafty tennis.  Karen's victory in singles salvaged one win on the day for Oneonta and saving them from a shutout loss.  Another notable score for the Red Dragons was at the third singles position as sophomore Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) returning in only her second match after a long layoff from injury and illness kept things tight in the first set losing only by a service break 6-4 and ultimately dropping the competition 6-1.

The Red Dragons quickly return to action on Wednesday, September 25th against regionally ranked RPI at the Heissan Tennis Courts on the campus of SUNY Oneonta beginning at 3:45 PM.
