Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's tennis defeats Scranton to remain undefeated

Red Dragons move to 7-0

Scranton, PA - A short two-hour trip down to the University of Scranton to take on the Royals in what turned out to be a five-hour dual match for the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team coming out on top 5-4 in thrilling style.  As a result the Red Dragons move their winning streak to seven and stay undefeated.

Doubles was not what the Red Dragons were hoping for in that they could only come up with one victory on court two.  Sophomores Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) and Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) got a break in the match early and it held up to take the contest 8-6.

The Red Dragons of Oneonta found themselves in a 2-1 hole and the match looked like the Royals would come out on top.  Oneonta went down 4-1 and were only one singles match away from losing the competition.  Freshmen Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) had to retire in first singles with an apparent muscular injury leaving Oneonta to take all the other courts to win.  Magic began to happen when freshman Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) went on to a straight set win in the third position 6-2, 6-3.  Back up in the second singles court Fraser was down 5-2 in the first set and fought back to force a tiebreaker which she won and completed the win with mentally tough tennis with a score of 7-6, 6-3.  The Red Dragons at this point were only down 4-3 and still fighting.  Sophomore Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) returned to the lineup after a three-week hiatus due to injury and won the first set at the sixth position only to drop the second set forcing a ten-point super tiebreaker.  Carswell prevailed after being down 0-3 in the breaker coming back to win it 6-3, 1-6 (10-4).  The win for Carswell tied the dual meet at four a piece.  The team competition outcome was now in the hands of Macdonald who played consistent tennis in the fifth flight securing the first set 6-2.  The second set was tight and Macdonald was down 2-3 and 3-4 before she streaked back to take the match and clinch victory for Oneonta.

Next up for Red Dragons is to take on their nemesis and SUNYAC rival SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday, September 24th at 3 PM on the campus of SUNY New Paltz.
