Lakers stun women's lacrosse in overtime

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team fell to Oswego 14-13 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium.

The Inside Story
Oneonta (8-7, 4-3 SUNYAC) got off to a fast start with the first three goals of the game. Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber) put the Red Dragons on the board 1:02 into the game on a pass from Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey). Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) and Lauren Bascelli (Williston Park/Herricks) then tallied goals just 34 seconds apart to give Oneonta a 3-0 advantage.

Oswego (8-4, 5-3 SUNYAC) scored their first goal at 9:26 on Kamryn Sherman's first maker of the season. After Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) scored her team best 55th goal of the season to give Oneonta a 4-1 lead, Oswego's Montana Garrett tallied back-to-back goals pull the Lakers within striking distance at 4-3. The two teams would go back and forth on the next six goals. With Oneonta holding an 8-6 lead after a Christen Patalano (Mineola/Kellenberg Memorial) free position tally, Oswego netted back-to-back goals to knot the game at 8-8 at halftime.

Calabrese opened the second half with a goal on a free position shot to put Oneonta back in front 9-8. After Molly Beck tied the game for the Lakers, Bascelli scored shorthanded on a free position shot to give the Red Dragons a 10-9 advantage. After Avazis and Molly Beck scored unassisted goals for their respective teams, Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) tallied a free position shot put the Red Dragons up 12-10.

The Lakers would rally to tie the game the game at 12-12 on Montana Garrett and Molly Beck goals just 54 seconds apart. Varone gave Oneonta the lead on a pass from Avazis with 11:57 remaining in regulation. The score remained the same until Kamryn Sherman tied the game for Oswego with 2:06 left on the clock, sending the game into overtime. The Lakers would get a goal from Brigid Regin 1:16 into overtime to earn the 14-13 victory.

Calabrese paced the Red Dragons with a hat-trick. Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin), Avazis, Bascelli, Varone and Patalano finished with two goals apiece. Goalie Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) made 15 saves in the loss.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action on Tuesday, April 23rd when they travel to Cortland for a SUNYAC showdown at 4:00 p.m.
