Ahken Chu (Patterson/Carmel) won the New York State Championship in the 141-pound weight class Sunday afternoon at Oswego. Classmate
Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City/Johnson City) was the runner-up in the 149-pound weight class while five other Red Dragons earned All-State honors as well. As a team, the Red Dragons earned a fourth-place finish in the 13-team tournament.
The Inside Story
After receiving a bye in the first round,
Ahken Chu (Patterson/Carmel) began his day with an 18-0 tech fall over RIT's Austin Bourgeois. In the quarterfinals, Chu earned a 16-0 tech fall over NYU's Jacob Bernstein. Chu advanced to the finals with a 17-1 tech fall over RIT's Isaiah Ocasio. In the finals, Chu pinned Brockport's Eli Sims in 2:23 to capture the New York State Championship. Chu's efforts earned him the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award as well.
Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City/Johnson City) began his day with a pin of Afred State's Cale Bartosch in 2:12. Brazinski then took a major decision over Ithaca's Tristen Schiafo. In the quarterfinals, Brazinski clawed his way to a 5-3 decision over Tristen Schiafo from Cortland. Brazinski then advanced to the finals with a 5-2 decision over Cortland's Cahal Donavan. Brazinski came up short in the finals with a 10-6 decision to Frankie Gissendanne from Niagara Community College.
In the 125-pound weight class,
Michael Savello (Kings Park/Kings Park) earned All-State honors with a fifth-place finish. After dropping his first match of the day, Savello won his next three matches in the consolation bracket, including a pin of Nelson Martinez from SUNY Sullivan.
Andrew DeSousa (Smithtown/Smithtown West) also earned All-State with a fifth-place finish in the 133-pound weight class. DeSousa pinned his first three opponents of the day before falling in the semifinals.
Thomas Marrone (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) garnered All-State recognition after a sixth-place finish in the 165-pound weight class.
Matthew Shields (Mount Temper/Onteora) and
Jacob Mansman (Tuscon, AZ/Ironwood Ridge) earned All-State with eighth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
