Wrestling earns four wins at Electric City Duals

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team went 4-1 at the Electric City Duals Sunday afternoon at Scranton University. The Red Dragons defeated Lackawanna College (36-16), Middle County College (51-0), Rowan University (26-19) while splitting with Scranton (16-19 & 42-12).

The Inside Story
Tykler Skala gave Oneonta a 3-0 lead against Lackawanna when he defeated Michael Tuffy 6-4 in the 125-pound weight class. Trailing 4-3 after a loss at the 133-pound weight class, Ahken Chu (Patterson/Carmel) gave the Red Dragons the lead back with a technical fall in the 141-pound weight class. Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City/Johnson City) increased Oneonta's lead to 12-4 with a 9-1 major decision at the 149-pound weight class. JohnCarl Petretti (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) pinned Alvin Hunter in 1:30 to up the Red Dragons lead to 18-4. Oneonta would drop the 174-pound match before earning 18 points from forfeits in the 165, 184 and 285-pound weight classes.

Oneonta fell to Scranton in their second match of the day. After dropping the first match by way of a major decision, Andrew DeSousa (Smithtown/Smithtown West) Pulled the Red Dragons within one with a 2-1 decision over AJ Sortino in the 133-pound weight class. Trailing 10-3, Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City/Johnson City) earned three points with a 7-6 decision. The Red Dragons took the lead when JohnCarl Peretti and Thomas Marrone (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) earned back-to-back decisions to make the score 12-10.  Unfortunately, Oneonta dropped the final four matches as Scranton held on for the 19-16 win.

Oneonta dominated Middlesex from the start. After jumping in front 18-0 on three forfeits, freshman Kawan Willis pinned his opponent in 1:13 to make the score 24-0. JohnCarl Petretti (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) followed with a pin of his own in 4:32 to up the Oneonta lead to 30-0. Onoenta finished the match with wins from Thomas Marrone (Pleasantville/Pleasantville), Steven Bilali (Eastchester/Eastchester) and Jonathan Solorzano (Lindenhurst/Lindenhurst).

The Red Dragons took advantage of their second match against Scranton, scoring 30 unanswered points. Tyler Skala (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) got the Red Dragons going with an 18-0 technical fall to open the match. Michael Smith (Smithtown/Smithtown West) followed with a 16-4 major decision before Ahken Chu (Patterson/Carmel) pinned his opponent in just 1:12. Kwan Willis followed with a pin in 1:03 to make the score 27-0. After Thomas Marrone (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) won a 5-2 decision to make it 30-0, Timothy Rathbun and Jacob Pine (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls) wrapped up the match with pins of their respective opponents.

The Red Dragons finished the day with an impressive win over Rowan. After falling behind 4-0, Andrew DeSousa (Smithtown/Smithtown West) gave Oneonta a 6-4 lead with a pin in 5:35. Ahken Chu (Patterson/Carmel) followed with a 16-0 technical fall while Tyler Brazinski (Johnson City/Johnson City) and JohnCarl Petretti (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) earned back-to-back decisions to give Oneonta a 17-4 lead. After consecutive losses made the score 17-13, Steven Bilali (Eastchester/Eastchester) gave the Red Dragons some breathing room with a 9-5 decision. Holding onto a slim 20-19 lead, Jonathan Solorzano (Lindenhurst/Lindenhurst) clinched the victory with a pin in 4:50.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action on Saturday, November 16th when they host WPI and Muhlenberg beginning at 2:00pm.
