Binghamton, NY - With a semifinal berth in next week's SUNYAC conference championships on the line Oneonta came up with a 7-2 win against SUNY Brockport to clinch an appearance in the playoff. Since 2013 the Red Dragon have not missed at least a semifinal berth in the league championships making this year a guaranteed seventh consecutive year.Â
Doubles was a lopsided affair with the Red Dragons shutting out Brockport on courts one and two. The number one team of freshman
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and junior
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) turned an 8-0 win. The same thing happened on court two as sophomores
Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) and Oliva Fraser duplicated the effort with an 8-0 score. Sophomores
Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) and Gio Buccina at the third flight completed the doubles sweep with an impressive 8-4 win.
The 3-0 lead going into the singles allowed the Red Dragons to rest some players and put out a different lineup than usual to complete the win. Sophomore
Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) moving up in the lineup to the top position showing no sign of injuries causing her to miss half the fall season was a winner in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Lipscomb and Fraser went to the numbers two and three positions respectfully and the both turned in straight set double bagels 6-0, 6-0. The fourth position belonged to freshman
Emily Greene (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills West) who returned to the lineup after an illness got off to a slow start shaking off the cob webs, she dropped the first set 7-5. Greene rebounded and took the match 6-1 (10-5). Greene's victory was the last one on the afternoon for the Red Dragons and secured the 7-2 triumph.
The SUNY Oneonta Women's Tennis Team return to action once again with a 24 hour turnaround taking on their arch-rival the SUNY Geneseo Knights. The actions gets underway at 3 PM at the Binghamton Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon October 6th. The number two or three seeds for conference championships positioning is at stake.
