Volleyball trots past Morrisville

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team defeated Morrisville State 3-1 in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Dewar Arena. The win lifts the Red Dragons record to 17-6 on the year.

The Inside Story
The Red Dragons took the first set 25-22. Trailing 14-11, Oneonta took the lead with an 8-1 run, scoring five of the points with Juliana Valencia (Franklin Square/H. Frank Carey) at the service. The Mustangs were able to cut the deficit to 24-22 before Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) cliched the set with a kill on an assist from Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills).

After dropping the second set 25-16, the Red Dragons captured the third set 25-15. With Oneonta clinging to a 10-9 lead, the Red Dragons broke the set wide open with a 10-0 run with Carsyn Rachuta (Holbrook/Sachem North) at the service. Oneonta closed out the match with a Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) kill on an assist from Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills).

Oneonta captured the match with a hard fought 27-25 victory in the fourth set. After Oneonta jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, the two teams went back and forth for most of the match, battling through nine ties. With the match knotted at 25-25, back-to-back kills from Adriana Losier (Fishkill/John Jay) and Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) gave the Red Dragons the victory.

Just the Stats
The Red Dragons finished with a .370 hitting percentage as a team. Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) led Oneonta with 15 kills and five blocks. Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) added 14 kills while Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) had 12. Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) dished out 48 assists while Carsyn Ruchuta had three service aces.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action on Friday, October 18th when they host Plattsburgh in SUNYAC action at 6:00pm.
