Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's tennis falls in SUNYAC title match to New Paltz

Binghamton, NY - The SUNY Oneonta Women's Tennis Team finished another outstanding fall season with a 12-4 record and for the second year in a row finished as a runner-up in the SUNYAC tournament.  Today's match could have gone either way, but New Paltz had a little more depth than the Red Dragons and won the match 5-2.

Doubles was exciting from the get go.  In the third tier sophomores Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) and Giovanna Buccina (Syracuse/Westhill) both battling through injuries almost pulled off an upset and had a chance to close the match out with the Red Dragons serving.  Unfortunately New Paltz pulled even and closed out the match 8-7 (7-2).  Oneonta salvaged a point on the number two flight as sophomores Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) were keen on the big points and broke serve twice in doubling up their Hawks foes 8-4.

The point at number two doubles was crucial to keep Oneonta in the match.  Fraser at third singles was up a set 6-4, 1-4.  Sophomore Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) was up winning at the fourth position with the identical score of 6-4, 1-4.  MacDonald playing at the sixth position today was the other concluded winning finish for Oneonta as she won 6-2, 6-3.  The tight matches at third and fourth plus MacDonald's win made for a dramatic match but New Paltz clinched the match on the first court for the fifth and final victory sending home the Red Dragons with another great season and a runner-up finish in the championships.

In 2018-19 the Red Dragons had their best finish in the history of the college and with today's runner-up finish Oneonta has equaled that accomplishment.  The Red Dragons now take a break before the spring season and open up their non-traditional 2020 campaign with a match against Piedmont College on March 9th in Orlando, Florida.
