Women’s Tennis year ends with a 12-8 record after returning from Florida

Women's Tennis year ends with a 12-8 record after returning from Florida

Kissimmee, Florida – The women's tennis year of 2019/20 ended prematurely due to the national health crisis.  After a fall 2019 season where the women's tennis team reached the SUNYAC Championships for the second time in school history and for the second year in a row;  The Red Dragon women traveled to Florida to compete against top teams from the rest of the country in their non-traditional season.

Although Oneonta came home winless from Florida for team wins there were indeed some notable individual results that squad could feel good about going into the summer and the fall 2020 SUNYAC campaign.

Some noteworthy scores in Florida occurred against an NAIA team from Michigan (Aquinas College) where sophomores Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) found a win at the number two doubles position recording a score of 8-5.

On the grounds of the USTA National Tennis Complex in Orlando, two more individual wins for the Red Dragon women took place against Washington College of Maryland.  Sophomores Gianna Buccina and Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) were successful in the doubles third flight when they recorded a win doubling up their Washington College foes 8-4.  Junior Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) got the big win on the day against Washington College in the number one singles position scoring an impressive 1-6, 7-6, (12-10) victory against a top tier opponent from Maryland. Another notable result occurred the following day v a team from California (Occidental College) when sixth seeded singles player Emily Greene (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills West) split sets with her opponent before succumbing in the super tiebreaker.

The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragon women will return to action in August of 2020 and begin their fall SUNYAC Championship Campaign.
