Women's Tennis Advances to SUNYAC Final with shutout over SUNY Geneseo

Red Dragons advance to championship match for second straight year

Binghamton, NY - For the second year in a row the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team has advanced to the SUNYAC Championship match.  Oneonta set back the SUNY Geneseo Knights in a very dramatic match with a 5-0 shutout.  The score did not represent the incredible quality of tennis displayed.

The action in the doubles stanza were nail biters on all three courts contested.  The number three team of sophomores Giovanna Buccina (Syracuse/Westhill) and Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) got the first victory for the Red Dragons as they walked off the court 8-4 victors.  The excitement both on courts one and two went the distance.  Junior Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) and freshman Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) went back and forth with both duos breaking serve several times.  With Geneseo serving for the match Karen and Lipscomb broke them at love to force a tiebreaker.  The Oneonta pair were down 5-4 but won the next three-points to clinch the second match for the Red Dragons.   On the second court sophomores Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) and Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) started off slowly down 5-2 and then again 6-3.  They fought back to tie the match and then again went down 7-6.  They forced a tiebreaker and again went down 3-0.  They fought back to tie and then again went down 5-3.  The Knights held match points with Macdonald and Frasier saving three of them.  They fought to finally get a match points of their own and converted at 9-8 to close out the doubles 8-7 (10-8) competition 3-0 for Oneonta.

Singles was equally as exciting.  However, the first Red Dragon to walk off the court was Karen in the fourth flight as she mounted a lopsided 6-1, 6-0 victory.  The clincher came from Lipscomb who found herself in a tight first set at one point down 4-3.  She won the next three-games and the set 6-4.  Lipscomb then settled down and cruised to a second set triumph 6-2.  Lipscomb's match at first singles proved to be the fifth and deciding contest and the competition was halted with Oneonta shutting out Geneseo who lost to Oneonta for the second year in a row in the semi-finals.

The Championship final get underway on Sunday, October 13th beginning at 1 PM at the Binghamton Tennis Center.  The Red Dragons will meet their nemesis the SUNY New Paltz Hawks and will try and defeat them for a first ever championship.  Earlier in the season the Red Dragons lost to New Paltz 8-1 on their campus.
