Volleyball comes up short against Geneseo

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team fell to Geneseo 3-2 on Friday evening in SUNYAC action. The loss drops the Red Dragons record to 15-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.

The Inside Story
After dropping the first set 25-21, Oneonta evened the match with a 25-17 win in the second set. The Red Dragons jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead with Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) contributing four kills. After the Knights cut the deficit to 11-7, Oneonta went on a 3-0 run with two of the points coming on kills by Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson). Oneonta never gave up the lead, using a 4-1 run to end the set.

After suffering a 28-26 heartbreaker in the third set, the Red Dragons regrouped for a 25-19 win in the fourth set.  Oneonta opened the fourth set with a 6-1 run. After Geneseo cut the deficit to 6-5, the Red Dragons went on a 6-0 run with Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) at the service. The Knights rallied late in the set, cutting the Oneonta lead to 18-16. A pair of Geneseo attack errors and a Juliann Posch (Brookhaven/Bellport) kill gave Oneonta some breathing room. Two kills by Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) and one by Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) forced a fifth set. In the fifth set, Geneseo jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back as the Knights won 15-6.

Just the Stats
Oneonta out hit Geneseo .173 to .133 for the match. Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) led Oneonta with 13 kills and three blocks. Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) chipped in with 12 kills while Kathryn Johnston (Altamont/Guilderland) added 11. Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) finished with 54 assists and Lindsay Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) contributed 18 digs in the loss.

The Red Dragons return to action on Tomorrow, October 12th when they host Brockport at 1:00pm.
