Rivera and Bull post double doubles in win against Buffalo State

Sophomores Andres Rivera (Bronx, NY/Walton) and Joseph Bull (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) each recorded a double double tonight to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a 74-70 road win at Buffalo State.  Both players scored 20 points and combined for 24 rebounds including a game high 14 by Bull.
 
Oneonta (7-7, 2-6 SUNYAC) opened up a double-digit lead early in the second half and held off a late surge by Buffalo State (3-10, 1-6 SUNYAC) to pick up its second SUNYAC victory of the year.
 
Bull posted 11 points in the second half while junior Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half.
 
The Red Dragons fell behind 13-4 in the opening four minutes of the game.  A 10-2 run led by Rivera's eight points cut Buffalo's lead to 15-14.
 
Trailing 20-16 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, Oneonta scored 10 unanswered points to grab a 26-20 lead with 7:14 left.  The Bengals closed the opening half on a 12-2 spurt to grab a 32-28 advantage heading into halftime.
 
The Red Dragons opened the second half with a 9-2 run to regain a 37-34 lead at the 17:51 mark.  Another 9-2 spurt pushed Oneonta's lead to double digits for the first time with just more than 12 minutes left in the game.
 
Oneonta put together another 7-0 run to seize control of the game leading 65-48 after Bull made a layup at the 8:49 mark.  The Bengals then made a push and actually cut Oneonta's lead to a bucket with 42 seconds remaining.  A pair of free throws by Ryniek Holloway capped a 22-7 run and made the score 72-70.
 
After an Oneonta turnover, Buffalo State had two opportunities including a layup that was missed by Holloway with six seconds left.  Bull secured the win with a pair of free throws.
 
Oneonta recorded 16 steals in the game and converted 23 Bengal turnovers into 30 points.  Sophomore Sean Nolan (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) recorded a collegiate best six thefts to lead the Red Dragons.
 
Oneonta will play at Fredonia tomorrow beginning at 2pm.
