Women’s Tennis stops Plattsburgh win streak at three

Red Dragons open SUNYAC season with 9-0 victory

Plattsburgh, NY – The SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals were riding high with a three-match win streak but ran into a very hungry Oneonta Red Dragons squad looking to stop their locomotive and move to 2-0 themselves.  With their first SUNYAC dual match of the year the women of Oneonta halted the Cardinals train and handed them their first loss of the year in a resounding shutout fashion.

Doubles play began with the number one tandem senior Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) and sophomore Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) quickly taking command and cruised with dominant net play to an 8-2 victory.  The number two duo of freshman Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and sophomore Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) faltered briefly as they get used to each other as new partners this year but regrouped and closed the Cardinal pair out 8-5.  The third doubles pair of freshman Madeline Carswell (Albany/Bethlehem) and freshman Alexandra Dratch (Montgomery/Valley Central) had little trouble dismantling their foes with their clean groundstrokes along with steady net play vaulted them to an 8-2 win securing a 3-0 lead after the doubles stanza.

Singles competition began with the Red Dragon women not letting the Cardinals have a glimmer of life and kept their opponents from even securing a set in all starting positions.   Eulau played a hard hitter in the number one position but with steady and poised play ultimately cruised to victory 6-1, 6-2.  Brault in the number two position got off to a slow start but then also found her rhythm playing more aggressively from the baseline and went on to tally a 6-4, 6-1 win.  Lipscomb in the third flight stays undefeated in the fall championship seasons dating back to 2017 and today she had little trouble dominating her opponent from the get go on route to an easy 6-0, 6-1 win.  The rookies in the four, five and six positions showed some veteran style play with Fraser at four playing a stubborn Cardinals opponent but the Red Dragon played the big points better and took home a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win.  Dratch dismantled her opponent in the fifth spot 6-1, 6-2 and playing flawless tennis in the sixth position Carswell did not drop a game and cruised to 6-0, 6-0 win securing the shutout for the Red Dragons of Oneonta.

The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons have little time to recover; they will set out to play SUNY Cortland in another SUNYAC matchup beginning on Tuesday, September 11th at 3 PM on the campus of Cortland State.
