Cortland, NY – For the third match in a row the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team came away with a shutout this time against their arch rival Cortland. What is more impressive is that the Oneonta women have not even dropped a set in their three dual match victories. This match also moved Oneonta to 2-0 in conference play.
The doubles began with sophomore
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) and senior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) playing perhaps the most compelling match of the day. The duo went ahead several times in the contest and held match points five different times with Cortland playing steady tennis refusing to go quietly. Finally on the sixth match point Oneonta converted and closed out doubles play with a 9-8 (7-5) win, a contest lasting almost two hours. In the tiebreaker Oneonta went down 0-2 before going ahead 6-2 and finally winning that elusive match point when Cortland pulled within just one. With the number two doubles tandem of sophomore
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) and freshman
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) doubling up their opponents 8-4 and the freshman twosome of
Alexandra Dratch (Montgomery/Valley Central) and freshman
Madeline Carswell (Albany/Bethlehem) disposing of their opponents 8-1 to give the Red Dragons a comfortable 3-0 lead after doubles.
Singles saw Eulau play very steady tennis in the number one position. She was threatened a few times but won all the big points at crucial times and secured a straight set win, 6-3, 6-3. Brault in the second flight was not happy with her doubles play and took her anger out on the Cortland foe and dominated 6-1, 6-0. Lipscomb continues her fall season 2017 and 2018 unbeaten run extending the streak securing a hard fought 6-2, 6-4 victory. Lipscomb weathered the Cortland's foe stubbornness by playing steady tennis.
Then appears the four, five and six singles positioned combatants Fraser, Dratch and Carswell all freshman losing just 10 games between them and the rookies remain undefeated on the season thus far writing a compelling story for the newcomers. Noteworthy, the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons sent out 10 of the 11 remaining players on the roster to play exhibition contests and each player checked back in with victories making the day an overall sweep for Oneonta.
The Red Dragons now will welcome the University of Scranton Royals to Oneonta on Friday, September 14
th at the Heissan '63 Tennis Courts beginning at 4 PM. Last year the always strong Scranton squad lost a close match to the Red Dragons 5-4 and look to avenge that loss from a year ago.
