On the day that SUNY Oneonta men's soccer celebrated its seniors, it was a newcomer that lifted the Red Dragons to victory today against Oswego. A goal by freshman
Jeremy Pantoni (Goshen/Goshen) in the 87
th minute proved to be the difference in a 1-0 victory that raised Oneonta's overall record to 6-3-2 and 3-1 in the SUNYAC.
Â
"The second day of back-to-back matches is often a struggle and today was no exception," said Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "Oswego was unlucky not to win the game and fortunately Jeremy came through with an individual goal right at the end."
Â
Pantoni's goal was set up by junior
Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman), who controlled a loose ball about 30 yards out in the middle of the field. Hernandez took a couple of touches before sliding a pass into the box on the right side. Pantoni settled the pass and then got the ball on his right foot where he sent a shot along the ground that found the inside of the left corner of the goal.
Â
Seven minutes prior to the eventual game-winner, Oswego (3-5-1, 0-3 SUNYAC) had its only threatening opportunity in the game where a shot wide of an open goal kept the game scoreless. A ball played into the box found its way to Caleb Asamoah's foot where he took a shot that hit the post rebounding out and across the goal area. On the follow up, Iviko Gejadze chipped it wide right of the open goal.
Â
Shortly after Oswego's near miss, senior
Scott Cebollero (Commack/Commack) redirected a service on a corner kick that was headed towards the goal that was blocked.
Â
Cebollero and Hernandez combined for Oneonta's best scoring chance in the first half when Cebollero headed a ball off the cross bar and, on the follow, Hernandez headed the rebound just over the cross bar.
Â
The Red Dragons dominated statistically, outshooting the Lakers 13-5 while earning six corner kicks and conceding just one to Oswego.
Â
Seniors
Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack) and
Nick Lindovski (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) combined for the shutout today. Lindovski entered the game at the beginning of the second half and picked up his second win of the season.
Â
Oneonta will take to the road for the next few weeks beginning next weekend at Geneseo and Brockport.
