Women's Tennis moves to 7-0 with win against Elmira College

Remain undefeated on the season

Oneonta, NY – The Red Dragons women's tennis team riding high after an impressive win v RPI on Tuesday did not have a letdown at all.  The Elmira College Soaring Eagles came into town hoping to put a dent into the Red Dragons but it did not come to pass.

Elmira played shorthanded and gave up two courts on the onset.  From there the Red Dragons took six of the seven individual matches contested and dropped Elmira 8-1 in the dual competition.

The doubles saw some changes today when sophomore Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) and freshman Giovanna Buccina (Syracuse/Westhill) toppled the number one duo from Elmira 8-2.  The newly paired tandem bonded quickly and worked to piece a together an impressive victory.  The same could be said for today's number two pair of sophomore Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) and freshman Sara Cayaban (Bellmore/Mepham) who were teamed for the first time and controlled the net on route to a 8-2 triumph.

Singles and already a 4-0 lead in the match was insurmountable and freshman Tamiyah Massey (Long Beach/Long Beach) playing fifth singles found herself being the first player off to help clinch the dual match for Oneonta.  She played her first match in the main lineup and secured a 6-1, 6-0 triumph.  Back in the number one position senior Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) played today in the top spot and had a challenging time in the first set but came up with a 6-3 win before settling down and steadying up her game taking the second set 6-0.  It was the first time in Halpern's career she played in the top position and she did not disappoint.    Freshman Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) for the second week in a row turned in a double bagel 6-0, 6-0 this time playing number two.  The third position was occupied today by freshman Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) who played commanding tennis and never was threatened and won out 6-2, 6-2.  Noteworthy was the fourth position player sophomore Gianna Papini (Helwett/George W. Hewlett) who played well but was nursing a shoulder, she tried to tough through it but had to settle for a 6-2, 2-6 (9-11) setback having played valiantly throughout.

No rest for the Red Dragons who on Saturday will welcome SUNY Farmingdale at 10 AM and St. Joseph's College at 1 PM on the campus of SUNY Oneonta at the Heissan Tennis Courts.
