Oneonta, NY – Less than 24 hours after a victory over Elmira College the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team returned to the Heissan courts and played a doubleheader against SUNY Farmingdale and St. Joseph's College. The day began at 10 AM and when the matches were completed by 5 PM the Oneonta Women's Tennis Team swept the pair and moved to 9-0 on the season winning every single individual court in both dual competitions.
Doubles against SUNY Farmingdale saw senior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) and sophomore
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) get off to a slow start but eventually doubled up their foes and won 8-4. Freshman
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and sophomore
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) continue their successes as a tandem winning overwhelmingly 8-1. Freshman
Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) filled in at number three doubles again today joining forces with freshman
Madeline Carswell (Albany/Bethlehem) and easily won 8-2.
A 3-0 lead after the doubles put the SUNY Farmingdale Rams in quite a hole they could not dig themselves out of. Brault playing in the top spot today won 6-2, 6-3. The interesting match taking note of was at the second position where Lipscomb is still undefeated in the fall season from 2017 and was tested early. Down 5-2 in the first set she came back to win 7-5 and never looked in the rear view mirror as she stormed to 6-0 second set victory closing out the match. Fraser was steady in the third position checking in with a 6-2, 6-1 conquest. Playing out of position today in the fourth tier was Carswell who continues to rack up wins securing a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Freshman
Tamiyah Massey (Long Beach/Long Beach) playing in the top lineup today at the fifth flight won the first set easily 6-1 and battled through a close second set but passed the test winning 7-5 and recording a win for Oneonta. Playing in the sixth spot was Giovanni Buccina who secured the shutout for the Red Dragons and walked off the court a 6-1, 6-1 victor.
Next up was St. Joseph's College in an afternoon affair and the Red Dragons again dominated their opponents. Playing in the first flight out of position was Fraser and Lipscomb and their dominant net play brought them to an 8-2 win. The second flighted pair of freshman
Alexandra Dratch (Montgomery/Valley Central) and Carswell teamed back together but also out of position and went ahead 7-0. However, the duo from St. Joseph's College fought back giving a scare to the Red Dragon tandem. However, Dratch and Carswell weathered the storm and on their fifth match point they converted and tallied an 8-6 triumph. The third position was MacDonald who for the first time played together with freshman
Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) and they were absolutely perfect bageling their opponents 8-0 securing a 3-0 lead after doubles play.
St. Joseph's could not mount a comeback and were also shutout of the singles competition dropping all six flights. Brault was locked in a tight first set but closed out her opponent 6-4, 6-1. Lipscomb in her fourth match of the day continues to find ways to win and again extends her two year winning streak in singles earning a 6-4, 6-0 conquest. Fraser also playing her fourth match of the day was down a break in the first set, finally she got the break back and held onto secure a 7-5 first set win. The St. Joseph's opponent stubbornly lost the second set 6-4; this match occurred in the third flight which was an out of position lineup spot for Fraser who has only lost one singles match this fall. Senior
Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) was a winner playing in the fourth tier double bageled her opponent 6-0, 6-0 playing overpowering and flawless tennis. Dratch was a winner in the fifth position and had little trouble taking home a 6-1, 6-0 win. Securing the second team shutout of the day was Carswell playing in her fourth individual match on the afternoon, she braved through some fatigue after a long day of tennis and won 7-5, 6-3.
Noteworthy were all "off-lineup" players from Oneonta playing exhibitions against Farmingdale and St. Joseph's won making it a perfect overall day for the Red Dragons with almost all players seeing action.
Next up is the SUNYAC Foe the New Paltz Hawks whom the Red Dragons have not beaten in over a decade. Oneonta will try to stop the Hawks with a home match on the campus of SUNY Oneonta beginning at 3 PM on Tuesday, September 25
th at the Heissan Courts.
