Salisbury and Towson, MD – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team played good competition over the weekend splitting matches against the Salisbury University Sea Gulls and Goucher College Gophers.
First on tap was number 13 regionally ranked Salisbury and the Red Dragon women put together some great highlights against some of the region's best competition. Notable results occurred in doubles as the number one pair of junior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) and freshman
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) played a very tight match and lost a close 8-6 decision. The notable singles highlights were from the same pair. Brault played a good first set but lost 6-2 and then kept pace with her opponent in the second set losing by only one break of serve 6-4. Eulau suffered a similar fate losing a long competitive match 6-2, 6-3.
The Red Dragons then headed to Towson, MD and took on Goucher on Sunday and came home from Maryland with a lopsided win scoring an 8-1 triumph. The doubles was a shutout for the Red Dragons as Brault and Eulau were tested early but came away with an 8-3 victory. Senior
Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and freshman
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) were tested as well and a won in a tiebreaker. The number three pair of sophomore
Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and freshman
Gianna Papini (Helwett/George W. Hewlett) played a back and forth match but pulled away earning a well fought 8-6 win.
Singles was never a threat for the Red Dragons as they started up 3-0 and did not look back. Brault at number one, Eulau at number two, Lipscomb at number three, Felice at number five and Swierczyna at number six were all victorious in their positions. All scored straight set wins with the exception of Felice who needed a super-tiebreaker to secure a triumph. The final score was 8-1 for the Red Dragons and made the bus ride that much more pleasant on route back to Oneonta sweeter. The Red Dragons now own a very impressive 13-7 record on the 2017/18 campaign.
The Red Dragons will get back in action to close out its non-traditional spring season with a very tough match against regionally ranked College of NJ on Saturday, April 28
th at TCNJ beginning at 10 AM.
