Orlando, Florida - The site of the new USTA National Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida was the venue of the spring opener for SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team. Coming of an impressive fall season with the best record for the program in 15 years ending at 11-2, it was time to put that all aside and begin the spring season facing tough out of conference competition. On the docket was Trine University of Indiana which set the women of Oneonta back 5-4.
Down two starters from the fall singles lineup, the Red Dragon women came out of the singles stanza with three very impressive victories. Numbers one and two players junior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) and freshman
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) started out where they left off in the fall securing victories at their respective positions. Brault was a routine 6-2, 6-3 winner while Eulau was locked in a closely contested affair but came out on top with a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7) 10-8 victory. Sophomore
Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) perhaps played the feature match as she dropped the first set 4-6 and was on the verge of losing being down 3-0 in the second set in the fifth spot. As is typical of Swierczyna she never gives and she fought back and won the second set 7-5 and in the super tiebreaker she went down 4-7 and again fought her way back and took home from Florida a very dramatic and memorable win 4-6, 7-5 (10-8).
The Red Dragon women were tied 3-3 going into doubles play but they could only muster one more win as the pair of Eulau and Brault won at number one 8-5 which earned the fourth point for Oneonta but could get anymore and lost the dual competition 5-4.
The Red Dragon women head back north and take on Elmira College in Elmira on Tuesday the 27th of March beginning at 4 PM.
