Elmira, NY – The SUNY Oneonta Women's tennis team played its second match of the spring season and got their first win in 2018 moving the squad to an impressive 12-3 record overall on the year.
Doubles began with the top team of junior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) and freshman
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) dominating their opponents going up 7-1 and survived a short lived comeback from their Elmira foes and took home an 8-4 win. Senior
Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and freshman reunited as a team from their successes in the fall and impressively shutout their opponents 8-0. Sophomore
Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and freshman
Gianna Papini (Helwett/George W. Hewlett) got off to a slow start going down 3-2 early but from there ran off six straight games and won handily 8-3.
A dominant 3-0 lead after the doubles stanza was insurmountable in this case as the Red Dragons showed no wrinkles in their arsenal and kept the Elmira squad on their heels throughout the singles competition. Brault played a tight first set and then cruised to victory 6-4, 6-1. Eulau was dominant surrendering only two games and defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Junior
Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) played a tight first set but was victorious only to see the Elmira deadlock the match at one-set each. Halpern was dominant in the super tiebreaker and earned a nicely fought match 6-4, 6-7 (10-6). Lipscomb remains undefeated in the fourth position and was completely forceful in playing perfect tennis earning a 6-0, 6-0 triumph. Felice only lost two-games in her fifth singles match and cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win while Swierczyna easily outlasted her sixth singles opponent earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The Red Dragons now move into the heart of their non-traditional season competing against some very good out of conference opponents. Next up is Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 31
st beginning at 11:30 PM. That contest is a home match but will be held indoors at the Binghamton Tennis Center in Binghamton, NY.
