Volleyball Blanked by New Paltz

The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell to New Paltz 3-0 in SUNYAC pool play Friday evening. The loss drops the Red Dragons record to 7-13 overall and 1-3 in SUNYAC action.

The Red Dragons finished the match with a .123 hitting percentage with Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) leading the way with six kills. Adriana Losier (Fishkill/John Jay) and Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) added five kills apiece with Kathryn Johnston (Altamont/Guilderland) finishing with four. Johnston paced the Red Dragons with five digs and three service aces.

In the first set, the two teams went back and forth early on. After a Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) cut the Red Dragons deficit to 10-8, New Paltz responded with a 7-0 and never looked back as the Hawks earn a 25-15 victory.

In the second set, Oneonta jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage with Katelyn McDonough (Guilderland/Guilderland) at the service. Oneonta would extended their lead to 10-4. With the Red Dragons holding a 17-13 lead after an Adriana Losier (Fishkill/John Jay) kill, New Paltz used a 5-0 run to take the lead. Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) ended the Hawks run with kill, knotting the set at 18-18. After the two teams exchanged points to make the score 20-20, New Paltz used a 3-0 run to propel them to a 25-21 win in the second set.

In the third set, Oneonta used a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead with Kathryn Johnston (Altamont/Guilderland) at the service. After a service ace by Juliann Posch (Brookhaven/Bellport) put Oneonta in front 22-18, New Paltz responded with a 6-0 run to take a 24-22 advantage. A New Paltz service error gave the Red Dragons some hope, but a Julie Greenspan kill secured the match for New Paltz.

The Red Dragons return to action tomorrow when they continue pool play Fredonia at noon before they battle Plattsburgh in the nightcap at 2:30 p.m.
