The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team fell to SUNY Cortland 3-2 in double-overtime Wednesday evening in SUNYAC Semifinal action. The loss ends the season for the Red Dragons with a record of 10-9.
Oneonta got on the board in the 17
th minute when senior
Allyson Wells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) backhanded a shot into the back of the Cortland goal for her 15
th maker of the season.
Cortland responded in the 27
th minute when Shannon McGuinness fed Jess Gibaldi on a corner to knot the game at 1-1. With under five minutes to play in the first half, Hannah Burchell redirected a shot off the left post and into the net to give Cortland a 2-1 lead at the break.
The score remained the same until the 69
th minute when
Grace Bilow (Webster/Webster Thomas) connected
Colleen Geyer (West Nyack/Clarkstown South), who blasted a shot into the Cortland net to tie the game at 2-2.
After a scoreless first overtime, Cortland earned a trip to the SUNYAC Championship when Jess Gibaldi scored on a loose ball in front with 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Cortland outshot Oneonta 25-15 for the game with the hosts holding an 11-10 advantage in penalty corners. Oneonta had their chances to win the game in the second overtime as they had three penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper
Danell Jones (Whitney Point/Whitney Point) made 14 saves in a losing effort while
Grace Bilow (Webster/Webster Thomas) and
Jessica Kehoe (Greene/Greene) made crucial defensive saves for Oneonta.
