The SUNY Oneonta women's volleyball team dropped a thrilling match against Cortland 3-2 on Friday night in SUNYAC pool play. After dropping the first two sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-23, Oneonta took the next two sets 27-25 and 29-27. Ultimately, Oneonta's rally came up short as Cortland took the fifth set 15-11.
The loss drops Oneonta's record to 10-16 overall and 2-5 in the SUNYAC.
With the scored tied at 24-24 in the third set,
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) set up
Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) for the kill. Cortland responded with a Taylor Konzen kill to keep the seesaw battle going. On the next service,
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) got the kill to pull Oneonta within a point of the victory. A bad set by Cortland on the next service gave Oneonta the 27-25 victory.
In the fourth set, Cortland held the lead for the majority of the contest. With Oneonta trailing 23-21,
Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) got back-to-back kills to knot the set at 23-23. Moulder then rejected a kill attempt by Cortland's Gabby Fernandez to give Oneonta their first lead of the set. Moulder then closed out the set with kill on a feed from
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) to force a fifth set.
With Oneonta trailing 6-5 in the fifth set after a
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) kill, Cortland used a 4-0 run to put the set out of reach and capture the 3-2 victory.
Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) had a match high 24 kills, along with a team high four blocks.
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) chipped in with with 17 kills.
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) led Oneonta with three service aces and 45 assists.
Lindsay Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) (24),
Delaney Dower (Oneonta/Oneonta) (22) and Julieann Posch (15) combined for 61 digs.
Oneonta returns to action tomorrow when they continue pool play against Brockport at noon.
