The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team swept the second day of the Oswego Invitational. The Red Dragons began the day with a 3-0 victory over St. John Fisher before defeating to Oswego in the nightcap 3-1. The pair of wins improves the Oneonta record to 10-15 on the year.
The Red Dragons dominated the first set against St. John Fisher by a score of 25-10. Trailing 4-3 early in the opening set, the Red Dragons went on a 10-0 run with
Katelyn McDonough (Guilderland/Guilderland) at the service. The Red Dragons never allowed St. John Fisher to go on a run as the Cardinals never tallied more than two points in a row.
In the second set, Oneonta jumped ahead early with
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) at the service. With the set knotted at 4-4, the Red Dragons used a 6-1 run to jump in front 10-5. St. John Fisher would rally after they called a timeout to pull themselves within one. Eventually the Cardinals would tie the set at 17-17 after a serving blunder by
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego). With St. John Fisher leading 23-20,
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) fed
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) to begin the rally for the Red Dragons.
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) pulled Oneonta within a point with a kill, before her and
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) blocked a Cardinal kill attempt, knotting the set at 23-23. With
Lindsay Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) at the service, Fowler set up Culeton to give Oneonta a 24-23 lead. An attack error by St. John Fisher on the next volley gave the Red Dragons the thrilling 25-23 victory in the second set.
In the third set, the teams would battle back and forth early. With the score tied at 12-12, Oneonta went on a 4-0 run with
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) at the service. The Cardinals were able to cut the deficit to 20-18 before the Red Dragons used another 4-0 run to pull within one point of finishing of the match. The Cardinals would get three points back before
Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) fed
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) for the match winner.
In the second match of the day, Oneonta took the first set against Oswego 25-23. Clinging to a 17-16 lead, Oneonta went on a 4-0 run with kills by
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego),
Kathryn Johnston (Altamont/Guilderland),
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) and
Adriana Losier (Fishkill/John Jay) to take a 21-16 advantage. With Oneonta leading 24-21, needing one point to finish off the first set, a service error and an attack error by the Red Dragons allowed Oswego to pull within striking distance. After a timeout by Oneonta, the Lakers next service went out of bounds as the Red Dragons held on for the victory.
The Red Dragons would drop the second set 25-22 before capturing the third 25-20. With Oneonta holding on to a slim 11-10 lead, Oswego used a 4-0 run with Jessica Long at the service to go in front 14-11. Trailing 19-16, Oneonta went on a 7-0 run with
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) at the service to take a 23-19 advantage. Oswego would use a timeout to try and cool down the Red Dragons. After the Lakers ended the Oneonta run, an attack error by the hosts pulled the Red Dragons within a point of ending the set. Oneonta's
Kathryn Johnston (Altamont/Guilderland) ended the set when she blocked an Oswego kill attempt.
With the score tied at 7-7 in the third set, Oneonta took the lead for good on a
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) kill. The Stieglitz kill propelled Oneonta on an 8-2 run as the Red Dragons took the fourth set 25-16.
Adriana Losier (Fishkill/John Jay) led the Red Dragons with a team high 22 kills.
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) and
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) added 20 kills apiece, with Stieglitz delivering six service aces. Culeton also had a team best eight blocks and a .410 hitting percentage.
Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) contributed 11 kills, including six blocks while
Kathryn Johnston (Altamont/Guilderland) added 12 kills and four blocks.
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) dished out 52 assists while
Lindsay Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) gathered 35 digs.
The Red Dragons return to SUNYAC pool play action next Friday, October 19
th when they battle Cortland at 5:00 p.m.
