Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer bounces back with 3-1 win at Oswego

Ventura scoes in sixth straight match

Oswego, NY - The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team bounced back nicely today to defeat the host Oswego Lakers 3-1.  Three different players scored for the No. 7 Red Dragons who moved to 5-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC.  The loss for the Lakers dropped them to 6-2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

"The second game of a doubleheader weekend, particularly in the heat, is always a physical struggle," stated Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "Fortunately, we managed to see out the last 45 minutes and end the weekend on a positive."

Statistically, Oneonta held a decided advantage in shots, 21-11, and corners, 6-3.  Of the 21 shots, five were on cage, three of which found the back of the goal.  All the goals in today's match were scored in the opening 45 minutes.

Freshman Roberto Ventura (Brentwood/Brentwood) continued his early season scoring today notching his sixth of the season in the second minute to give Oneonta the early 1-0 lead.  Ventura has now scored in each of his first six games in a Red Dragon uniform.

Senior Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) pushed Oneonta's lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute scoring his second goal of the season.  Santangelo's shot came from outside the box that deflected off the goalie's chest and into the goal.

Caleb Asamoah scored the Lakers' lone goal five minutes later to get them on the board.  He dribbled the ball down the field, popping it over the goalie's head and into the net.

The Red Dragons added another goal in the 41st minute to grab a 3-1 lead heading into the break.  Junior transfer Anthony Antunes (Riverhead/Riverhead) scored unassisted after stealing the ball and continuing through the middle of the field into the box before unleashing a shot to the back of the goal.

Oneonta returns home next weekend for a pair of SUNYAC matches.  Friday the Red Dragons host SUNY Geneseo at 3pm while on Saturday they host Brockport beginning at 1pm.
