Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer returns home and defeats Geneseo 4-1

Freshman Ventura nets pair of goals

A pair of goals in each half for the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team gave them a 4-1 victory against the visiting Knights of SUNY Geneseo today in SUNYAC action.  Freshman Roberto Ventura (Brentwood/Brentwood) scored a pair of goals to lead the offense for the No. 14 Red Dragons who also got 10 saves from junior Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack).

"Once again Roberto stole the show," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "His ability on the ball is frightening.  Geneseo played well today while we are struggling to get some consistency in our play."

A lot of back-and-forth action took place in the opening half of play before Oneonta (6-1-1/2-1 SUNYAC) broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute on a penalty kick.  Ventura was dragged down inside the box and the referee awarded Oneonta the PK, which senior Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) stepped up and converted for the game's first goal.

Ten minutes later it was Santangelo returning the favor to Ventura with a through ball that gave Ventura some space.  The Geneseo (4-4-1/1-2 SUNYAC) came charging, but Ventura's shot deflected off his leg and trickled across the line for his seventh goal of the season.

Prior to Ventura's goal, Giordano made a one-handed save of a Greg Baumstein shot from close in.  Giordano made a couple of more big saves in the second half to keep Oneonta's cushion before adding a final goal at the 75-minute mark.

In the 54th minute, a hand ball was called in the Geneseo box giving the Red Dragons another penalty kick, which Ventura converted.  Ventura has scored in all seven games that he has played for Oneonta, which is tied for the second longest streak in program history.

Geneseo's lone goal today came in the 57th minute on a restart.  Caleb Murthy got his foot on a ball that had deflected off a couple of players.  His shot bounced off the right post and across the goal line into the left side.

Oneonta's final goal was scored by senior Kevin Hoff (LaGrange/Arlington) who was in the right spot to put the ball across the goal line on a restart.  Sophomore Phil Barabanov (Riverhead/Riverhead) started the play with a service from just inside the 50 which Scott Cebollero (Commack/Commack) redirected with his head.  The shot then caromed off the right post across the goal where Hoff finished the play off.

Oneonta will host Brockport on Red Dragon Field tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1pm.
