Men's soccer battles rival Cortland on the road to open SUNYAC schedule

Host Red Dragons come out on top 4-2

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The nationally 13th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals in the second half to erase a 2-1 deficit in defeating seventh-ranked Oneonta, 4-2, Friday afternoon in the SUNYAC opener for both teams. The host Red Dragons improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the visiting Red Dragons fell to 4-1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

"It was a good SUNYAC game," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "I Felt Cortland were better in the second half and got the goals they needed."

Sophomore Cam LaVallee led Cortland offensively with two goals and one assist. Junior Migell Ormsby recorded one goal and one assist, and junior Jake Keller scored his team-high sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Miguel Tunas picked up and assist, and freshman Michael Lanzetta registered the first point and assist of his career. Senior goalie Connor Young made five saves.

Junior Carlos Martinez (Brentwood/Brentwood) and freshman Roberto Ventura (Brentwood/Brentwood) each netted a goal for Oneonta with junior Justin Cebollero (Commack/Commack) collecting an assist. Junior goalie Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack) registered seven saves.

Cortland took the lead in the ninth minute when Ormsby delivered a driving header from inside the six-yard box off a cross from the left by LaVallee. Oneonta tied the game in the 21st minute on a restart. After a Cortland foul, just outside of the 18 at the left elbow, Martinez blasted a shot that deflected off a Cortland defender past Young.

The host Red Dragons generated the first two chances in the second half, but LaVallee's one-time volley on a cross from the right was denied by Giordano in the 49th minute and Keller slid a shot just wide of the left post from the right side in the 54th minute. Less than two minutes later, Ventura gave Oneonta the lead, finishing off a cross from Cebollero at the far post with a header.

In the 66th minute, LaVallee was taken down in the box and converted the awarded penalty kick to tie the score at 2-2. Keller scored the game winner in the 78th minute. Tunas carried deep down the right side and slipped a pass back into the box where Keller one-timed a shot past Giordano for a 3-2 lead.  Two minutes later, Young made a diving save on a 20-yard loose-ball shot by Cebollero to keep Cortland in front, and LaVallee added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute with a shot inside the right post as Ormsby and Lanzetta assisted.

Oneonta will play again tomorrow at Oswego beginning at 1pm.
