CASTLETON, Vt. – The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team defeated Castleton State, 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Red Dragons improved to 4-2 and Castleton fell to 2-5 on the year.
Following the slower first half, in which neither team scored, the Red Dragon offense came alive in the second half. Oneonta scored three goals in less than three minutes, starting in the 45th minute of play.
Carissa Warren (Harpursville/Harpursville) started it with a penalty stroke goal to the left of the keeper. Less than a minute later, Nicole Johnston (Bedford Village/Fox Lane) lifted the ball over a group of players to make it 2-0. Allyson Bilow (Webster/Webster Thomas) finished the three-score spurt with a redirect to the left.
In goal, Danell Jones (Whitney Point/Whitney Point) improved to 3-2 – in the cage – for the Red Dragons. Leah Holland recorded the start for Castleton. She faced 10 shots on goal, making six saves in 70 minutes of play.
Castleton was unable to muster any shots on goal but tallied three total shots in the first half. Of the three, two were off the post. In the latter period, the Spartan offense began to click with seven shots, while four came on goal.
The Red Dragons are back in action next weekend against SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Brockport
