OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team defeated the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons, 9-7, on Saturday afternoon. Oswego is now 4-5 and 2-1 in the SUNYAC while Oneonta falls to 5-4 and 2-1 in league play.
Just over a minute in, Teresa Shattuck took control of the ball, set up the play and found Montana Garrett for the first score of the game. The duo would pair up to score three more times, providing much of the Laker offense.
Shortly after the opening tally, senior Kendall Appelbaum picked up a loose ball and took it herself to the net, scoring her ninth goal of the year. Junior
Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) scored for Oneonta to cut the lead in half before Shattuck distributed the ball once again, this time to Gemma O'Kane to see the Lakers to a 3-1 advantage.
Oneonta did not disappear in the contest, fighting back to tie it at 3-3 on Casey's second goal and another by senior
Katie Flannery (Massapequa/Plainedge). Oswego countered with four unanswered to grab a 7-3 lead at halftime.
In a relatively low scoring second half, the Red Dragons fought back, scoring four of the game's last five goals. However, it was not enough, as the Lakers were able to fight off the ferocious charge. Toni Laneve scored her second goal of the game with 6:41 remaining in regulation, providing a major insurance goal.
Sophomore goalie
Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) recorded seven saves in the contest while Angela Ponto made 19 saves for Oswego.
Oneonta will play its rescheduled contest against Farmingdale on Tuesday at home beginning at 4pm.
