Women's Lacrosse comes from behind to beat Farmingdale in overtime thriller

The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team battled back against Farmingdale State to win 16-15 in overtime. The Red Dragons improved to 6-4, while the Rams took their first loss of the season to fall to 10-1. Sophomore Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) led all scorers with six goals on the day.

Farmingdale State opened up the game with a quick goal by Kristen Keller to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.  The Red Dragons answered back by scoring the next three goals, two by Cohen and one by sophomore Cara Zanta (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville Senior).

The Rams rallied back with four goals including a man down goal to give Farmingdale a 5-3 lead. The Red Dragons answered with two goals both assisted by junior Jaime Morris (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) to tie the game at five goals apiece. Farmingdale scored three more goals to take a 8-6 lead going into the half.

The Rams came out and tacked on three more goals in the first four minutes of the second half. Three of the four goals were scored by Farmingdale's Meghan Sullivan. This gave Farmingdale a five goal lead, 11-6.

With 10 minutes left in regulation, the Red Dragons were trailing by four goals 14-10. Junior Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) scored her third goal of the match to cut the Farmingdale lead to three, 14-11. With the Red Dragons trailing by three goals, Cohen took over on offense scoring three consecutive goals to tie the game at 14.

Farmingdale's Brittney Rosino scored on a free position shot to give the Rams a 15-14 lead with 1:10 left in the game.

On the following draw control Rosino won control and took the ball to the net trying to ice the game by scoring a goal. She was fouled but also was called for an offensive foul, the offsetting fouls were decided by the possession arrow which was in favor of Oneonta. The Red Dragons cleared the ball and senior Katie Flannery (Massapequa/Plainedge) carried the ball to net, drawing contact she beat the goaltender with a bounce shot to tie the game at 15 with 31 ticks left in regulation.

The game headed into overtime and on the opening draw Cohen won control for the Red Dragons. Morris played hero for the Red Dragons as she received the ball behind the cage. She beat her defender to cut across the goal where she launched a rocket to the top left corner to score her 12th goal of the season and end Farmingdale's perfect record.

Freshman Lexi Keen (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) earned her first win of her college career in net and classmate Kelly Clarke (East Meadow/East Meadow) had two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Flannery had six points off of two goals and four assists and junior Katelyn Higgins (Colonie/South Colonie Central) scored her first goal of the season.

The Red Dragons are back in action at Brockport this Saturday, April 15th at 3:00pm.
