Women's tennis gains first win of spring season versus Bard

Oneonta, NY - The Red Dragon women won for the first time this spring season defeating Bard College in lopsided fashion 7-1 with one singles match stopped because of darkness.

The Red Dragon women are working through several lineup adjustments as they wind down the 2016/17 campaign.  Today's doubles lineup featured senior Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) playing her final home match of her career joining with sophomore Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) at the number one position.  Green and Haedrich were locked in a tight battle but got a break in the 13th game and Green closed out the match with her serving winning 8-6.  In the second doubles position senior Kayla Houle (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) and senior Valerie Joern (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) teamed together as graduating seniors and were on court for a match that lasted two hours.  Unfortunately, the Red Dragon duos were on the short end of a 9-7 loss.  Bard College then defaulted their third doubles position and that allowed the Red Dragons to hold a 2-1 lead going into singles play.

Singles play was indeed a lopsided affair in favor of the Red Dragons.  Green was dominant in her usual number one position winning handily 6-0, 6-1.  At the number two position freshman Jacqueline Guidice won her match by the identical score.  At the third singles flight sophomore Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) got her first win as a Red Dragon after transferring into SUNY Oneonta and she did so in overwhelming her opponent 6-0, 6-0.  Houle at fourth singles had little trouble dismantling her Bard opponent with a 6-1, 6-2 score.  Finally Joern playing in the fifth spot won the first set 6-3 and she was ahead in the second set 3-2 when the match was halted due to darkness.  The sixth position was vacant today as Bard defaulted the flight.

The win today moved the Red Dragons to 12-6 on the 2016/17 campaign.  The women now head to Rochester on Sunday, April 23rd to take on RIT beginning at 1 PM on their campus.
