Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s tennis drops match to Union 7-2

Oneonta, NY   – SUNY Oneonta women's tennis lost their second match in a row during their spring non-championship campaign.  The Red Dragons have a new look lineup for the spring and are trying to get into mid-season form with little practice and preparation time.

Things did not go the Red Dragons way in doubles as the number two team of senior Kayla Houle (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) and junior Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) were playing well.  However, Felice suffered an injury and the team had to retire.  The number three team of senior Valerie Joern (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) and freshman Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) were down 5-1 and fought back to a lead at 8-7 even owning a match point but could not convert and the pair settled for a loss in the tiebreaker.

Down 0-3 at the start of singles play the top four players could not find any rhythm and each player at those positions suffered set-backs.  However, in the fifth position Swierczyna won the first set and dropped the second and had to play the super-tiebreaker to determine the match.   Swierczyna pulled away in the tiebreaker and got the Red Dragons on the scorecard winning 6-2, 3-6 (10-4).  At sixth singles sophomore Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) was scheduled for a day of rest today but was tapped to play the position when the original designated singles starter Felice went down with an injury.  Haedrich answered the bell and came away with a 7-5, 2-6 (10-8) win to help the Red Dragons get their second match win on the day at singles and keep the dual match score respectable 7-2.

The Red Dragon women will look to get their first win of the spring when Bard College comes calling on Tuesday, April 18th beginning at 4 PM on the campus of SUNY Oneonta.
